Luis Arraez
Luis Arraez Loses arbitration case
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 1:02 PM
Arraez lost his arbitration hearing with the Marlins on Wednesday and will earn $10.6 million in salary for the 2024 season, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Analysis: Coming off a 2023 season in which he won the National League batting crown with a .354 average, Arraez filed for $12 million, but an arbitrator ruled in favor of the Marlins. The $10.6 million salary still represents a $4.5 million pay increase from 2023 for Arraez, who is set to go through the arbitration process one more time next offseason before becoming a free agent following the 2025 campaign. Arraez will head into his second season as Miami's everyday second baseman, and while he once again projects to rank among the league leaders in batting average, his paucity of power and speed put a ceiling on his overall fantasy value.
Curt Casali
Curt Casali Reaches deal with Miami
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 9:26 PM
Casali signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins on Tuesday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Casali was the backup catcher in Cincinnati for portions of 2023, though he earned only 96 plate appearances and posted a very poor .490 OPS. On the other hand, he lands in a good spot from an opportunity perspective, as Miami has only Nick Fortes and Christian Bethancourt as options behind the dish.
Yonny Chirinos
Yonny Chirinos Latches on with Miami
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 6:20 PM
Chirinos signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Tuesday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Chirinos was effective across 25 starts combined between the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Rays, but a combination of struggles on the field and a serious elbow injury have derailed his opportunity in the majors since then. The Marlins have a deep rotation so Chirinos isn't likely to find immediate opportunity, though he could be a leading candidate for spot starts when injuries occur if he can stick in the organization.
Nick Gordon
Nick Gordon Traded to Miami
Sun, Feb 11, 2024, 12:41 PM
The Twins traded Gordon to the Marlins on Sunday in exchange for relief pitcher Steven Okert, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Gordon will head to Miami after spending the first three seasons of his major-league career with Minnesota. The 28-year-old appeared in 34 games with the Twins in 2023, producing a disappointing .176 batting average with eight extra-base hits over 91 at-bats. He'll look to carve out a more significant role with the Marlins this season.
Peyton Burdick
Peyton Burdick Designated for assignment
Fri, Feb 9, 2024, 7:33 PM
The Marlins designated Burdick for assignment Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Burdick was removed from the 40-man roster in order to clear space for Darren McCaughan, who was acquired from Seattle on Friday. Burdick never returned to the Marlins after being optioned in late May, and he slashed .217/.325/.443 with 24 homers and 72 RBI in 492 plate appearances at Triple-A Jacksonville.
Darren McCaughan
Darren McCaughan Shipped to Miami
Fri, Feb 9, 2024, 7:17 PM
The Mariners traded McCaughan to the Marlins on Friday in exchange for cash, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCaughan cleared waivers Wednesday after being designated for assignment, but he'll reclaim a 40-man roster spot as he transitions to Miami. The 27-year-old righty made three appearances last season with the Mariners, allowing three earned runs in five innings while striking out ten batters and walking three. Peyton Burdick was DFA'd in a corresponding move.
Kent Emanuel
Kent Emanuel Gets look from Miami
Thu, Feb 8, 2024, 8:56 PM
Emanuel signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins on Thursday, which includes an invitation to Spring Training, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Emanuel last appeared in a major-league game in 2021 and has only 17.2 total big-league innings under his belt since being drafted in 2013. He's likely to serve as organizational depth for Miami in 2024.
Kaleb Ort
Kaleb Ort Designated for assignment
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:02 PM
Ort was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: He's being swapped out in favor of another reliever, Declan Cronin, who was claimed off waivers. Ort himself was a waiver claim by the Marlins earlier this offseason and now could be on the move again.
Declan Cronin
Declan Cronin Scooped up by Miami
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 12:36 PM
The Marlins claimed Cronin off waivers from the Astros on Wednesday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: It's the third organization Cronin has been in this offseason after he previously went from the White Sox to the Astros via waivers. The 26-year-old sinkerballer allowed 11 runs over 11 innings for Chicago in 2023 in his first go-round in the majors.
Jordan Groshans
Jordan Groshans DFA'd by Fish
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 8:52 PM
The Marlins designated Groshans for assignment Tuesday.
Analysis: Groshans will lose his spot on the 40-man roster following the acquisition of Jonah Bride from Oakland on Tuesday. After making his MLB debut in 2022, Groshans spent all of last season with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he slashed .244/.341/.331 with 61 RBI in 528 plate appearances. The 24-year-old will presumably return to Jacksonville to begin 2024.
Jonah Bride
Jonah Bride Headed to Miami
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 8:42 PM
The Marlins acquired Bride from the Athletics on Tuesday in exchange for cash, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Analysis: Bride was designated for assignment Friday following the Athletics' acquisition of Ross Stripling, and he'll now look to carve out a role for himself with the Marlins. Bride owns just a .528 OPS across 293 plate appearances in his MLB career, though he slashed .305/.432/.544 in the minors last season. Jordan Groshans was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Jon Berti
Jon Berti Likely to get competition
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 10:04 AM
Berti isn't expected to remain atop the Marlins' depth chart at shortstop as the club looks at available free-agent options, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Tim Anderson is the biggest name still on the market at shortstop, with Amed Rosario, Nick Ahmed and Adalberto Mondesi also said to be on Miami's radar. Berti saw a career-high 424 plate appearances last season, playing 64 games at short but also 41 at third base, 15 at second base and 19 between the corner outfield spots, and the Marlins still view him as a better fit in a utility role. If the team elects not to bring in a free agent, Jacob Amaya and Vidal Brujan could also get looks this spring as potential starting options at shortstop.
Anthony Bender
Anthony Bender Declares self ready for spring
Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 1:52 PM
Bender (elbow) said in a recent interview with Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald that he's fully recovered from his August 2022 Tommy John surgery and is prepared to enter spring training with no restrictions. "I'm ready to go in and help out anywhere I can," Bender said. "If there's a spot where my name is called, I'll go out there and do my job."
Analysis: In addition to having Tommy John surgery, Bender underwent a hip procedure late in the 2022 season and wasn't available to pitch at any level in 2023. He had been cleared to face hitters in the final weeks of the 2023 season and looks as though he's had a relatively normal offseason now that he's well over a year removed from Tommy John surgery. Before suffering the elbow injury, Bender had been one of the Marlins' top relievers in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but he may open the 2024 season in more of a lower-leverage role as he aims to regain his pre-surgery velocity and command. Miami is already bringing back most of its key relievers from this past season, when the bullpen ended up being a surprise strength for the team in the second half as the Marlins earned a spot in the postseason.
Nick Fortes
Nick Fortes Working on swing adjustments
Sat, Feb 3, 2024, 11:36 AM
Fortes worked on changes to his stance and swing this offseason, and Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is expecting more offense from him this season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: It would be hard for Fortes' offense to get worse in 2024 after he stumbled to a .562 OPS through 323 plate appearances last year, a significant decline from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. The Marlins like his work with the pitching staff though, and offseason addition Christian Bethancourt has a career .622 OPS in the majors, so the starting job behind the plate likely still belongs to Fortes.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. Loses arbitration hearing
Thu, Feb 1, 2024, 3:13 PM
Chisholm (toe) will make $2.625 million in 2024 after losing his arbitration hearing with the Marlins on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Entering his first year of arbitration eligibility, Chisholm had asked Miami for $2.9 million. Instead, he will have to settle for $275,000 less than his desired salary after appearing in 157 games across the past two seasons. Chisholm underwent surgery in October to address the turf toe in his right foot and is expected to be ready to go by Opening Day.
Trey Mancini
Trey Mancini Nets NRI from Miami
Wed, Jan 24, 2024, 9:45 AM
Mancini signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Mancini slashed just .234/.299/.336 with four home runs over 263 plate appearances with the Cubs last season and was even worse than that (.622 OPS) in the second half of 2022 with the Astros. Still, a modest rebound in what will be his age-32 campaign in 2024 is possible, and he should make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, barring unforeseen circumstances.
JT Chargois
JT Chargois Reaches deal with Marlins
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 10:21 PM
Chargois signed a one-year contract with Miami on Thursday to avoid arbitration.
Analysis: Chargois was effective out of Miami's bullpen in 2023, maintaining a 3.61 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP across 42.1 innings. He managed four holds and one save but pitched primarily in lower-leverage situations.
Trevor Rogers
Trevor Rogers Avoids arbitration with Miami
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 10:18 PM
Rogers (lat) signed a one-year contract with Miami on Thursday to avoid arbitration.
Analysis: Rogers was shut down in late April due to a lat and biceps issue and was not able to take the mound again in 2023. At the close of the regular season, he had still yet to throw off a mound. He should have the chance to begin the 2024 campaign healthy, but his current status is unclear.
Anthony Bender
Anthony Bender Agrees to terms with Marlins
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 10:12 PM
Bender (elbow) agreed to a one-year contract with the Marlins on Thursday to avoid arbitration.
Analysis: Bender missed all of the 2023 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He was facing hitters in September, meaning he should have the chance to enter the 2024 campaign healthy.
Jesus Sanchez
Jesus Sanchez Gets $2.1 million
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 9:56 PM
Sanchez agreed to a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Marlins on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Sanchez still hasn't really broken out, but he was worth a career-best 1.3 fWAR in 125 games last season. The 26-year-old right fielder slashed .253/.327/.450 with 14 home runs and three steals in 402 plate appearances and he will look to set a new career high in games played this season.
